VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds lost two of their final three games at the Southern Oregon softball tournament in Medford on Saturday.
The team opened the day with a 5-3 loss to the Concordia (Ore.) Cavaliers.
UBC was down 4-0 when
Alana Westerhof continued her prolific output by hitting a three-run home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning. But that would be all the scoring for the T-Birds as they couldn't finish the comeback.
Starter
Jamie Randall was saddled with the loss.
UBC rebounded with a 7-4 triumph over Southern Oregon in game two.
The T-Birds scored five runs in the first two innings. Most of the damage came in the form of a
Cassandra Dypchey three-run home run over the centre-field fence in the bottom of the second. That hit put UBC up 5-1 after two innings. The teams traded runs in the fifth and sixth to round out the scoring.
Westerhof started the game on the mound and got the win after throwing six innings. She gave up three runs and struck out six batters.
The day ended with a 7-3 defeat at the hands of No. 9 Oregon Tech. The Hustlin' Owls jumped out to a 5-0 lead before UBC responded with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Oregon Tech got two of those runs back in the sixth.
Westerhof drove in two runs while Dypchey went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Leigh Della Siega pitched a complete game, striking out eight batters.
The team will return home to host a doubleheader against Simon Fraser on March 2 at North Delta Park.
