VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds softball team opened the Southern Oregon University tournament on Friday with a split.
UBC beat the host Raiders 14-6 on
Alana Westerhof's three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning. The hit broke a 4-4 tie to put UBC up 7-4. Westerhof ended the day with three runs batted, bringing her season total to 23, the most in the NAIA.

The Thunderbirds did not trail the rest of the way but they were down 2-0 when
Cassandra Dypchey nailed a grand slam home run over the centre-field fence in the top of the third inning to give UBC a 4-2 advantage.
UBC added four more in the fifth inning, including two on
Carlyn Shimizu's two-run double to left field.
Dypchey ended the day with five RBI's while Westerhof and Shimizu both had three. Shimizu was also 4-for-4 from the plate.

Jamie Randall got the win for UBC.
In near freezing conditions, the team dropped its second game 11-2 to No. 9 Oregon Tech.
BOX SCORE
Jenna Neufeld and Shimizu had RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth when UBC was already down 11-0. Oregon Tech scored four times in the first and second innings.
UBC (7-9) will take on Concordia (Ore.), Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech on Saturday before heading back to Vancouver.
