Vancouver - The UBC Thunderbirds made it back-to-back sweeps in Regina with another 3-0 win (25-21, 25-14, 25-21) over the Cougars on Saturday to take a five-game win streak and 9-3 overall record into the break.
UBC was led by
Alex Russell,
Ben Chow and
Quentin Schmidt, who each had 10 kills to keep the Cougars guessing. The T-Birds outhit Regina .323 to .057.
Milan Nikic had another solid night, slinging the ball around for 35 assists and helping five different UBC players reach double digits in their attack totals. Nikic also had seven digs and four block assists.
Chow and Schmidt made some contributions on the block from the outside as well, with one solo block and one assist each. But it was Russell leading the way defensively with six blocks out of the middle. He also racked up his 10 kills on just 15 attacks for an extremely efficient all-around effort.
Andrew Nelson led the Cougars with 13 kills on only 27 attacks, but unfortunately for Regina, his attacks seemed to be finding the court one way or another just about every time, as he also had 10 errors.Â
Regina's search for win number one will continue into 2014 as they fall to 0-12 on the season.
The T-Birds are second in Canada West, one game up on both Alberta and Brandon, and a game and a half behind Trinity Western, who will play Manitoba later tonight.
UBC picks up conference play again on January 10 with a road series against UBC Okanagan. Their next home games are January 17 and 18 in an important battle of playoff contenders against Brandon.
