This weekend, the UBC men's hockey team will venture to southern Alberta to take on the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in the last weekend series before winter break. At the half way point of the season UBC needs to get going now if they hope to turn their season around.
Â
Currently sitting in seventh position in the Canada West with a record of 3-10-1, the Thunderbirds are coming off a two game set against the University of Manitoba Bisons at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbirds Sports Centre. Despite a disappointing 6-3 loss on Friday, UBC rebounded on Saturday and according to head coach Milan Dragicevic played one of their strongest games this season; however it was not enough as the Bisons scored twice late in the third period to earn the 6-4 victory. With the weekend losses, the 'Birds extend their disappointing losing streak to five.
Â
Cole Wilson and
Anthony Bardaro have championed the Thunderbird offense thus far this season. Wilson stands ninth in Canada West with 14 points, while Bardaro ranks 19th with 13 points.
Â
The Pronghorns, who are last in the conference with a record of 1-12-1, were recently bested by Mount Royal, who shutout Lethbridge in both games last weekend. This extends their losing streak to seven.
Â
Earlier this month, the Pronghorns and the Thunderbirds split a weekend series in Vancouver, with UBC cumulatively outscoring Lethbridge 10-8. In their first match-up, the teams extended the game to double overtime, with Lethbridge's Hayden Rintoul scoring his first goal of the season in the second overtime to secure the victory.
Despite a tough first half of the season UBC is only six points out of playoff spot behind Mount Royal, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, all of whom maintain a record of 6-7-1.Â

The puck will drop at 6:00 pm PST both Friday and Saturday in Lethbridge.
