VANCOUVER –
Milad Mehrabi found the back of the net twice to pace the No. 2-ranked UBC Thunderbirds men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over the UNBC Timberwolves in Prince George on Sunday. A UNBC own goal rounded out the scoring.
With the victory, UBC clinched a spot in the Canada West playoffs, extended its winning streak to eight games and improved to 9-1 on the season, while UNBC fell to 1-5-2.
Mehrabi's performance vaulted him into the lead in the Canada West men's soccer scoring race. The Coquitlam, B.C., native now has eight goals in ten regular season games this year.
Mehrabi struck first in the second minute. With two passes, UBC advanced the ball down the field onto the foot of Mehrabi, who stepped into the top of the penalty area and fired a shot past UNBC keeper Ty Venhola, giving the Thunderbirds an early 1-0 lead.
Niall Cousens got the assist after receiving a long ball and heading it over to Mehrabi, who scored again fifteen minutes later.
A direct free kick was awarded to the Thunderbirds just outside the 18-yard box on the left side of the field.
Harry Lakhan passed the ball five metres out to Mehrabi instead of taking a shot of his own; Mehrabi buried the ball into the bottom left hand corner. At half time, the Thunderbirds led 2-0 over UNBC.
A 72nd-minute own goal by UNBC was the only scoring in the second half.
Reynold Stewart dribbled the ball into the box and attempted to cross the ball when a misplaced header from the Timberwolves bounced back into the net.
UBC goalkeeper
Richard Meister stopped five shots for his first clean sheet of the season.
The Thunderbirds will host their final two home games of the 2013 regular season next weekend. UBC will play University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Oct. 11, and the Mount Royal University Cougars on Oct. 12 on David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium.
