VANCOUVER – The No. 2-ranked UBC Thunderbirds men's soccer team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 4-1 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves in Prince George today.
BOX SCORE
Â
Fifth-year midfielder
Reynold Stewart had two goals, while
Milad Mehrabi and
Mitchell Popadynetz, with his first-ever CIS regular season teally, had the other scores for UBC (8-1-0).
Â
Connor Noftle ruined the shutout bid of Thunderbirds' goalkeeper
Chris Beck with a goal in the 80th minute.
Â
Stewart got UBC off to a quick start when he scored on a rebound off his own penalty kick miss in the third minute. From their own side of midfielder, the Thunderbirds launched a long ball down the field for
Bryan Fong, who volleyed the pass to Stewart, who was hauled down in the box trying to reach the ball.
Â
His penalty kick right up the middle was stopped by UNBC goalkeeper Tyrone Venhola, but the ball rebounded into play and Stewart was the first to get to it, making no mistake on his second chance to score.
Â
Stewart was also instrumental on the game-winning goal in the 25th minute. After Beck knocked away a UNBC corner kick, Stewart took the loose ball and brought it down to the edge of the Timberwolves' penalty area. He passed the ball to
Harry Lakhan, who quickly tipped it over to Mehrabi standing to the goalkeeper's right. Mehrabi took a step towards the centre and slotted a shot past Venhola to make it 2-0.
Â
Just after halftime,
Mitchell Popadynetz scored his first Canada West goal in the 48th minute. UBC took possession off a UNBC goal kick and quickly moved the ball up the field where Lakhan, at the top of the penalty area, found Popadynetz in front of the goal with a beautiful spin pass. Popadynetz buried his shot to put his team up three goals.
Â
Stewart added another in the 81st minute to close out UBC's offensive output.
Â
Both he and Mehrabi now have six goals on the year, tied for the most in the Canada West with teammate
Paul Clerc.
Â
While UNBC scored late, the Thunderbirds were clearly the better team on the rain-soaked pitch today. UBC outshot UNBC 36-3 and 14 of those shots were on target.
Â
The two teams will meet again on Sunday at the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League Fields with kickoff scheduled for noon.
