Fairbanks, Alaska - It was a night to forget for the UBC Thunderbirds men's hockey team as they lost 8-1 to the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Saturday night at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska.
A night after dropping a 2-1 decision to the University of Alaska-Anchorage, the 'Birds could not keep pace with Nanooks as they scored eight goals on 37 shots on route to victory. UBC was outshot 37-24. The Nanooks did not waste anytime, scoring less then two minutes into each period of play.
The 'Birds trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes and 5-0 through two periods.
Kevin Smith finally got the 'Birds on the board in the third period of play on the power play. UBC finished 1-for-5 on the man advantage, while Alaska-Fairbanks went 2-for-6.
Cody Kunyk from Sherwood Park, AB led the Nanooks with two goals and an assist. Langley, BC's Colton Beck had a goal and two assists.
Matt Hewitt got the start for UBC and stopped 29 of the 37 shots in net.
The 'Birds will open the 2013-14 Canada West regular season next weekend in Calgary against the Dinos October 11-12.
