Vancouver – The UBC Thunderbirds travel north this weekend to face off against the UNBC Timberwolves in a pair of weekend matches. The Thunderbirds enter the weekend riding a six game winning streak and look to extend it against the struggling Timberwolves.
The Thunderbirds are coming off a pair of weekend victories defeating the University of Saskatchewan 3-2 and the University of Alberta by a score of 4-0.
After another strong showing this past weekend, a UBC player has been named the Canada West First Star of the week; the third week in a row a UBC Thunderbird has earned top honors. After scoring two goals and adding two assists in a pair of Thunderbird victories
Navid Mashinchi was given this week's recognition helping the team earn it's sixth straight victory.
UBC players currently hold the top three positions in Canada West point scoring with
Navid Mashinchi currently in the lead with ten points while
Reynold Stewart and
Milad Mehrabi are tied for second, each with eight points respectively. UBC defender
Paul Clerc remains atop the Pacific Division goal-scoring race with six goals through eight games
UNBC returns home after visiting the University of Fraser Valley this past weekend where the team lost its first game but managed to steal a point in a draw its second game. The Timberwolves record currently stands at 1-3-2 going into the weekend.
After scoring in the first ten minutes of each of the team's previous two games, the Thunderbirds will look to pressure the Timberwolves early. UNBC goalkeeper Tyrone Venhola will backstop the Timberwolves as he leads the Canada West in saves and sits in fourth in save percentage.
This weekend marks the first time this season that the two BC rivals have played each other. The last time these two teams met was at the mid-way point of the 2012 Canada West Season where UBC outscored UNBC 11-1 coming away with a pair of victories.
The weekend series begins on October 5
th at the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League Fields while the second of two games is scheduled for October 6
th to conclude the away series for the Thunderbirds. Both games are set to kickoff at 12 noon (PT).
