VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds dropped a 3-1 decision to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in the second round-robin match for both teams at the annual Thunderball tournament being hosted this weekend at War Memorial Gym.

The set scores were 25-18, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17 in favour of the Huskies.

Saskatchewan opened the fourth set on an 11-4 run, building a lead it was able to maintain the rest of the way.

UBC got off to a fantastic start in the second set, jumping out to an 8-2 advantage. Saskatchewan closed to 18-17 and 21-20 but could not complete the comeback.

The Thunderbirds then looked poised to take set three, taking an 18-13 lead, but the Huskies responded by taking the next six points and the lead. From there, it was a dog fight with UBC tying the game at 22-22 before dropping three of the next four points.

Jarrid Ireland paced UBC with 13 kills while
Ian Perry had 11 digs.

The T-Birds will face Mt. Royal on Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.

The Thunderball bronze-medal game will take place at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the championship match at 7 p.m.
