Lethbridge, AB -
Emily Wilson made her second consecutive start in goal and for the second consecutive game kept the team's amazing shutout streak going as the UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team defeated Lethbridge 3-0 Saturday afternoon. The goalkeeping duo of
Alyssa Williamson and Wilson have had a lot to do with that; their efforts buoyed of course by their teammates sterling defense. It is now seven and a half games that the 'Birds have gone without conceding a goal, and with Wilson only having to make two saves – it never really looked in danger of being snapped.
UBC set out their stall early in Lethbridge, producing a goal just one minute and five seconds into the game and kept things solid from thereon in.
Madison Guy leapt to head from the ball in from a
Taylor Shannik corner to give the Thunderbirds the lead and a bit of breathing space. The rest of the first half was played out in mostly UBC's favour. The shots read 7-3 at the break and a host of changes at the half did not seem to disrupt their rhythm. If anything it strengthened it,
Christina Donnelly and
Kym van Duynhoven both came on and contributed with goals. Duynhoven's came in the 86
th minute and topped off another impressive performance,
Taylor Shannik getting her second assist of the game.
For the second game in a row, UBC did not give up a single corner. Set-pieces are notorious for offering up scoring chances and if they can continue to limit their opponents chances as they have been doing, the longer this streak will continue.
The win moves UBC to 6-0-3 and third in the conference with a game-in-hand over second-place Saskatchewan. A win tomorrow against Calgary would allow them to leapfrog Saskatchewan and apply some pressure on league leaders Alberta, the only other undefeated team in the conference. Calgary lost to Trinity Western University this morning to drop them down to sixth and a record of 0-3-1 in their last four games.
