VANCOUVER – The undefeated UBC men's soccer team overcame an early deficit to take their sixth win of the season, knocking off the University of Winnipeg Wesmen by a final score of 5-1.
Earlier this season, the Wesmen were forced to forfeit their only 2 wins and a tie due to using an ineligible player. While this left them near the bottom of the rankings with just one point, they came out strong and were the first to strike today. Richard Rundle took a perfect pass in the slot from Oleg Andruschchyshyn and beat Thunderbird keeper
Luke O'Shea (Richmond, BC) in the 19th minute.
Remaining composed, UBC, the No. 3 team in the country, tied the game in the 27th minute and never looked back.
Midfielder
Daniel Gazzola (Burnaby, BC) showed some good footwork on his first goal of the season, tucking the ball past Winnipeg keeper Tyson Farago and just inside the post.
Less than four minutes later,
Greg Smith (North Vancouver, BC) added his second goal of the weekend, heading in a ball from
Navid Mashinchi (Port Moody, BC) to give UBC a 2-1 margin at half time.
In the second half, forward Gagandeep Dosanjh (Abbotsford, BC) added his fifth and sixth goals of the season, scoring in the 53rd and 80th minutes respectively. Also credited with an assist on Gazzola's first half goal, Dosanjh now leads UBC in goals scored and total points (16). His goals-per-game and points-per-game averages are top in the Canada West (CW) rankings as well.
Assists from Dosanjh's goals tonight went to CW assists leader
Kent O'Connor (Langley, BC), Smith, and
Alex Orasa (Richmond, BC). Orasa then got another helper when
Reynold Stewart (Delta, BC) capped the game off with a goal in the 89th minute, putting UBC up 5-1 at the final whistle.
The Thunderbirds will fly home for long weekend action against the University of Northern BC on Friday and Saturday. UNBC is playing its first season in the Canada West league and currently sits at 0-8. Kickoff for both games will be at 7 p.m. at Thunderbird Stadium.
