VANCOUVER – Four goals from reigning Canada West scoring champ
Janine Frazao (Port Moody, BC) sent the T-Birds to their fourth straight shutout win on Saturday, this time 6-0 over the Regina Cougars at Thunderbird Stadium.
All four goals were assisted by her forward mate
Taryn Lim (Richmond, BC), who Frazao passed for the team scoring lead with her performance today. She now has eight goals on the year to six for Lim.
“I have Taryn to think for assisting all my goals, but it's not just her. It was a complete team effort and I think that's why we're growing,” Frazao said after the win. “Everyone is working for one another and we're really starting to gel.”
It was actually defender
Kelly Cook (Maple Ridge, BC) who opened the scoring in the 21st minute. On one of UBC's 16 corner kicks on the night,
Rachael Sawer (North Vancouver, BC) dropped a ball right into the middle of the box perfectly placed for Cook to head it home to put the home side up.
Frazao then got her first of the night in the 40th. Lim made a great run down the right wing and into the box, holding off a defender and drawing Regina keeper Kacey McFee out of her net. Lim laid the ball off for Frazao who was open in front of goal, and she tapped it in to double the lead.
Facing a two-goal deficit at half, the Cougars were forced to open things up in the second 45 leading to more chances for the 'Birds.
“On attack we are scoring at key times and punishing mistakes. Goals change games and if you get a goal at an opportune moment it opens up and they have to chase us,” said UBC head coach Mark Rogers.
Frazao got her second just a few minutes after the break, timing her run into the box perfectly to collect Lim's pass with nobody but the keeper to beat. Again McFee was forced to charge and Frazao tucked the ball behind her to make it 3-0.
Her third was a cracking header off a great cross from Lim on the right wing. It hit Frazao in stride at the back of the 18 and she finished it brilliantly. She capped off her performance with a fourth goal in the 63rd minute, sprung for another break in on goal after a great touch from Lim.
Kym Van Duynhoven (Burnaby, BC) scored the sixth goal for the T-Birds on a 30-yard blast just a few minutes after being subbed on.
“That was 18 players again today and everyone who's gone in has given us a lift. Nothing better as a coach than to know that you can go with fresh legs and hopefully that will pay dividends for us at the end of the season,” said Rogers.
The win moves UBC to 6-1-0 on the year and also clinches a playoff spot for the team. The Cougars fall to 4-2-0. Next week the T-Birds are on the road to take on Alberta and Mount Royal. Their next home action is October 13 against UNBC.
