UBC opened the scoring 5:23 into the first period as
Nate Fleming beat Cougars goaltender Andrew Hayes for his first goal of the season. Regina tied it up just over four minutes later, courtesy of Troy Hunter. 1-1 is how things stood after 20 minutes of play.
In the second period, the Thunderbirds once again took the lead thanks to second year forward
Cole Wilson's (White Rock, BC) tally. UBC led 2-1. The Cougars though responded with a pair of goals less then three minutes apart. Tyler Henry and Hunter scored to put Regina in front 3-2. However, before the period was out
Brad Hoban (Victoria, BC) potted his second goal of the year to tie the game at 3-3.
Max Grassi (North Vancouver, BC) and
Neil Manning (Nanaimo, BC) picked up the helpers. Through two periods of play the score remained 3-3.
Just like on Friday night, the Thunderbirds gave up a goal in the first 20 seconds of the third period. Matt Strueby beat
Jordan White (Surrey, BC) 16 seconds into the frame to go ahead 4-3. UBC though had an answer, less then a minute later,
Wyatt Hamilton beat Hayes to tie the game at 4-4. There would be no more scoring in regulation.
After five minutes of 4-on-4 overtime and five more minutes of 3-on-3 overtime, nothing was solved so a shootout was needed. UBC outshot Regina 9-2 in extra time. It took eight rounds before a goal was scored and it proved to be the winner as Craig Cuthbert beat White to give the Cougars a 5-4 shootout victory.
The Thunderbirds have to settle for three out of a possible four points on the weekend.
Regina's Troy Hunter led all scorers on the night with two goals and two assists.
Wyatt Hamilton and
Nate Fleming each finished the night with a goal, two assists and a +3 rating.
Jordan White made 31 saves on the night. Regina's Andrew Hayes stopped 37 of 41 UBC shots he faced.
The Thunderbirds have a weekend off from the Canada West schedule next week, but will head down to Colorado for three exhibition games versus the University of Denver on October 6, Colorado College on October 7, and the Air Force Academy on October 8.
