VANCOUVER – The No. 8 UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to the No. 3 Trinity Western Spartans in Langley on Saturday night.
"I am disappointed with how we played tonight," said UBC head coach Mark Rogers. "We were second best by a margin in the first half. Trinity were worthy winners tonight, we have lots of work to do."
BOXSCORE
The Spartans scored twice in the first half. Natalie Boyd got the home team on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute.
Trinity Western took a free kick and then fed the ball to the right post where Boyd was to convert.
The second goal was courtesy of Krista Gommeringer, who scored her fifth goal of the year in the 37th minute.
Despite pressuring the home side late in the first half, UBC couldn't find a goal before halftime.
Then in the 65th minute, Colleen Webber scored on a free kick from outside 40 yards to put her team up by three goals.
The T-Birds' best opportunity came late when striker
Rachael Sawer had a clear-cut chance from 15 yards but she was stopped by a diving Trinity Western goalkeeper, Kristen Funk.
"I was a little more pleased with how we responded in the second half," Rogers said. "We were better in possession and showed a much higher willingness to compete. It is easy to start playing when you are down two nil, it is imperative that we learn from this and start the game with a far higher urgency."
"I also felt that first-year players Pasternak, Roughead and Guy all came on and did well for us. That is a positive from a difficult night."
UBC goalkeeper
Alyssa Williamson made three saves.
The Thunderbirds suffer their first loss of the season after winning their first two games last weekend.
The team's matches will be on the road. UBC will visit Winnipeg on Sept. 22 and Manitoba on Sept. 23.
