VANCOUVER –
Marco Visintin scored his second penalty kick goal of the game in the 68th minute ended up as the winning tally in a 4-2 UBC Thunderbirds victory over the Fraser Valley Cascades in Canada West men's soccer action on Friday night in Chilliwack.
BOXSCORE
Just two minutes after the go-ahead goal, UBC's
Navid Mashinchi added an insurance marker, his second of the year, scoring off a cross from
Kent O'Connor.
UBC wins its third straight game to open the 2012 season, while Fraser Valley drops to 0-1-0.
“UFV are a hard working team and they made things tough for us tonight,” said UBC head coach
Mike Mosher. “I thought our guys showed good character and patience to come back twice in the first half. I was also happy with our movement up front as we created several good chances, but their keeper did well.”
“In the second half we were not as sharp, but the boys worked hard and put UFV under pressure to earn the goals and result.”
The Thunderbirds fell behind early, surrendering a goal to the Cascades' Connor O'Neill in the ninth minute.
But Gagandeep Dosanjh was able to reply for UBC as he knocked a shot into the left side of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Sean Haley got the assist on the play, which took place in the 26th minute.
Fraser Valley went back up by a goal just seven minutes later when Cole Almond scored.
It looked like the Cascades would take a lead into halftime against the No. 6 team in the country but the Thunderbirds were able to earn the first of their two penalty kicks in the game just before the end of the first half, drawing a Fraser Valley foul inside the box in the 45th minute.
Visintin stepped up to the penalty spot and found the back of the net to tie the game at two.
With the pair of goals tonight, Visintin, like Dosanjh, has four in the first three games of the season.
T-Birds goalkeeper
Luke O'Shea earned the victory by making five saves. UBC out shot Fraser Valley 23-19 and also earned eight corner kicks while the Cascades did not get any.
UBC will host No. 1 Victoria on Saturday night on David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium.
Kick off is at 8 p.m. The Vikes lost 3-1 at Trinity Western on Friday night.
