VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds softball team split its two games on Friday against the No. 23 Corban Ore.) Warriors at Hood View Park in Clackamas, Ore.
UBC won the morning game by a score of 3-2, while Corban rebounded to take game two 10-1.
In the first game, the Thunderbirds got the winning run in the top of the fourth inning on an error.
The inning began with singles from
Carlyn Shimizu and
Molly Gosnell. Shimizu advanced to third on a fielder's choice, then came home to make it 3-0 UBC on a fielding error by Corban's Lounette Jackson at first base.
In the top of the third inning, UBC put two runs on the board, starting when
Jesslyn Hodge ripped a single to right field that brought home
Brittany Meyer from second base to give the visiting Thunderbirds their first run of the game. The very next batter –
Cassandra Dypchey – roped a single up the middle to bring home Hodge after she advanced to second on an attempted play at the plate on Meyer, as British Columbia grabbed an early two-run lead (2-0).
Corban scored twice in the bottom of the seventh but Thunderbirds starter
Nicole Day struck out Warrior batter Courtney Castronovo looking to end the rally and the game.
Gosnell finished with a game-high three hits.
In game two, UBC actually scored first as a Dypchey ground out scored
Brittany Meyer but the Warriors scored 10 unanswered runs to win in five innings.
The split comes after UBC lost 2-1 at Concordia in Portland, Ore., on Thursday. The back-end of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled.
The Thunderbirds now have a record of 5-13-1 and will visit Seattle University, an NCAA Division I school, for a doubleheader tomorrow, with the first game at 1 p.m. at Logan Field.
