VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds men's hockey team couldn't hold on to a two-goal lead and fell 3-2 in shootout to the host Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg on Friday night.
BOX SCORE
"Our power play hurt us tonight, going 0 for 4 was the difference, we need to capitalize on the power play," said UBC head coach Milan Dragicevic. "We battled hard for the game, and could have gone either way."
Marc Antoine Juneau (1st, Quebec City) scored for UBC in the shootout but neither
Jordan Inglis (5th, 108 Mile Ranch, B.C.) nor
Nate Fleming (2nd, St. Albert, Alta.) could do the same as Manitoba tallied twice to capture the victory.
Despite going scoreless with the man-advantage, the Thunderbirds opened the scoring at 8:36 of the first period on a goal from Inglis. He intercepted a Manitoba pass for a breakaway and roofed his shot to put UBC up by one. His eighth goal of the year assisted by Fleming.
The pair hooked up again early in the second period at 1:49, this time with Fleming notching his fifth goal of the season, and Inglis getting the helper.
But just six minutes later at 7:41, Bison Blair Macaulay scored his 19th goal to get his team on the scoreboard.
Manitoba's Del Cowan tied the game at 7:34 of the third period with his fifth goal of the campaign.
The Bisons outshot UBC 5-2 in the two overtime periods but couldn't get another shot past Thunderbird goalie,
Jordan White (3rd, Surrey, B.C.) until the shootout. White made 33 saves in a losing cause.
"We need to get production from other lines besides Fleming, Inglis and Hamilton, they have scored all the goals the past three games," said Dragicevic after the game.
With the single point from tonight's game, UBC (12-8-3) has 27 on the year, tied with Calgary for fourth place in the Canada West standings. The T-Birds still have two games in hand.
UBC and Manitoba will face off again on Saturday, with puck drop at 5 p.m. PT.
