VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds softball team split its final two games at the 2012 Northwest Cup in Clackamas, Ore., on Sunday.
Â
UBC opened the day with an 11-7 over Northwest Christian. The Thunderbirds scored seven runs over the final two innings to come back and beat the Beacons after trailing 5-4 through five.
Â
Cassandra Dpychey started the rally in the sixth with a one-out walk. She then came home off a two-RBI double to right center from teammate
Yasmin Bains two batters later. Then in the seventh, Dpychey came through again with a two-out double to score the team's first run in the inning, while scoring one batter later off a single from
Tayla Westgard.
Â
Finally, both Westgard and Bains, who reached on her own single, capped the scoring after coming home off a would-be third-out error from Northwest Christian. For their part, the Beacons came back in the bottom of the seventh with a run, but left runners stranded on third and first, as UBC closed out the victory.
Â
Starter
Jamie Randall got the win after pitching a complete game, while NCU's Jenna Royce picked up the loss in relief.
Â
UBC lost its second game 12-4 to Corban (Ore.), after falling behind by six runs by the end of the second inning.
Â
Jess Hodge hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning to give UBC its only runs of the game.Â
Nicole Day took the loss while Corban starter Chelsea Schriber earned the victory.
Â
The Thunderbirds finish the Northwest Cup with a record of 3-3, which included a close one-run loss to defending NAIA national champions, Oregon Tech.
Â
For the season, UBC's record stands at four wins and 11 losses, with one game called because of darkness while the score was tied. The team will now be off until March 1 when it returns to Oregon for a double-header at Concordia University in Portland.
