Saskatoon, SK - The UBC Thunderbirds earned another 3 points today with a 2-0 shutout win over the Saskatchewan Huskies. They lead the Canada West soccer regular season with 28 points.
Playing at PotashCorp Park in Saskatoon, the T-Birds jumped to a quick lead, scoring both goals in the opening 20 minutes. Forward
Steve Johnson (Tsawwassen, BC) headed in the winner seven minutes in, assisted by
Marco Visintin (Vancouver, BC).
Greg Smith (North Vancouver, BC) followed up with his fourth of the season in the 19
th minute. This gave the Thunderbirds a safe two goal lead that proved to be more than enough.
Richard Meister (Port Moody, BC) played the full 90 minutes in net for the Thunderbirds to collect his second shutout. He and his defence easily held off the Huskies, who only put two shots on target. Saskatchewan keeper Mark Diakiw (Saskatoon, SK) made six saves in the Huskies' losing effort.
UBC comes home undefeated with a 9-0-1 record and four key games remaining in the regular season. Up next is a rematch against defending CIS Champions, the UVIC Vikes. The two rivals last met a month ago, and UBC battled to a 1-0 victory on home ground. UVIC returns for round two with a mediocre 5-3-2 record this season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday night at Thunderbird Stadium.
