VANCOUVER - Fourth-year striker
Janine Frazao scored five goals on Saturday in UBC's 13-0 win over UNBC, making her the Canada West career scoring leader with 46 goals.
Frazao entered the game three back of Saskatchewan's Elizabeth Hudon, who had 44 goals in her Huskies career.
BOXSCORE
Rachael Sawer began the scoring barrage just after the one minute mark, hitting the bottom left corner with a shot from 25 yards out. She then assisted on Frazao's first of the night just two minutes later.
UBC was then held in check until the 15 minute mark, but
Taylor Shannik's first career goal set off a huge scoring run of seven goals over 22 minutes.
First it was Sawer striking again, and then Shannik set up Frazao's second goal of the night, putting her one back of the record.
Frazao assisted on
Christina Donnelly's first of the season 32 minutes in, and then two minutes later she tied the scoring mark with her third of the night. She controlled
Rachel Ramsden's cross and turned around a defender just inside ther 18 yard box before unleashing her shot to make it 7-0.
Ramsden and Sawer each scored again before halftime to make it 9-0, but Frazao had to wait until after the break to get the record.
In the 63rd minute, a great cross from the corner by Meghan Pasternak found Frazao in front of the net and she headed it just inside the far post for her 45th career goal.
"It seems like every Saturday I get a chance to stand here and heap praise on Janine, but its well-deserved," said UBC head coach Mark Rogers. "She's a pleasure to coach, she's a really instinctual striker, and she still has one more year to go. Well-deserved and Im very proud of her."
She added another goal just four minutes later on a penalty to make it 11-0. Shannik's second of the night and
Shayla Chorney's first career goal rounded out the scoring.
Fifth year keeper
Leah Peric kept a clean sheet with the help of fellow fifth-year defender
Kelly Cook and midfielder Ramsden in the final regular season home game of their T-Bird careers.
The 'Birds move to 7-1-2 with the win, and are currently third place in Canada West, four points behind Trinity Western.
Next week the 'Birds play second place Victoria and fourth place Fraser Valley to wrap up the regular season, making it a huge weekend in terms of playoff seeding.
"We're going to face a stiff test this Friday and Saturday, and then going forward into playoffs, so a lot of work still to be done for those games," said Rogers.
The Canada West quarterfinals go on Saturday, October 27. The top four finishers will host a quarterfinal match.
