UBC suffers first loss of 2011

EDMONTON - A relentless offence for the No. 3 University of Alberta Pandas handed the No. 5 UBC Thunderbirds their first loss of the season by a 2-0 score, Sunday afternoon at Foote Field in Edmonton.

Fourth-year midfielders Carleigh Miller and Elise Emmott scored for the now 5-1 Pandas while sophomore netminder Kelti Biggs made four saves to earn her third shutout of the season.

Keeping the persistent Alberta attack at bay was freshman goaltender Alyssa Williamson (Langley, BC), who made 13 saves in the game, many from point-blank range.

The previously undefeated 3-1-1 Thunderbirds started out strong, controlling the play in the first 15 minutes and sending three shots in Biggs' direction.

The former Canada West Rookie of the Year held her own while her teammates slowly tipped the scales and, in the final ten minutes of the opening half, made it a full onslaught on the UBC net.

Williamson turned away five shots in that timeframe before Emmott's corner kick one minute into injury time found third-year defender Shalla Kadima, who had her shot blocked by a UBC defender before Miller headed in the rebound for her first goal of the season.

Alberta kicked things up a notch in the second half, with several players turning on the afterburners and tearing down the pitch to force Williamson to make numerous brilliant saves.

Of the 29 shots she faced in the game, only one more found its way through when Emmott powered a 23-yard strike towards the fully outstretched 'keeper, who managed to get a touch on the ball, but it continued to sail into the top corner for the 2-0 Pandas lead in the 76th minute.

Emmott led all players with seven shots in the game, including four on goal, while teammate Amanda Black had six (also four on goal) and conference-leading goal-scorer Heather Lund fired four at the Thunderbird net. Rachael Sawer led all UBC players with two shots.

UBC visit Manitoba and Regina next weekend while Alberta will host Saskatchewan.
