SASKATOON - A slow start by both the no. 5 UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team and University of Saskatchewan Huskies helped push the two teams to a 0-0 tie on a surprisingly hot, 30 C day in Saskatoon.
It was the first time this season that UBC did not take all three points from a game.
UBC was slow out of the gate not registering a shot until 20 minutes into the first half.
Their best chance of the half was when
Rachael Sawer (North Vancouver, BC) put a corner kick right on the money but no T-Bird could capitalize on the good ball.
Saskatchewan's scoring duo of Daniela Fuenzalida and Elizabeth Hudon had chances to attack the T-Birds net. Fuenzalida put a ball across the mouth but no one was there to kick it home, while Hudon, who leads the Canada West in scoring all-time, had three shots that UBC keeper Ali Williamson got her hands on.
In the second half, both teams came out recharged picking up the pace of the game.
UBC broke out registering the first two shots of the half. Huskie Marissa Wilford was strong in net, stopping UBC's
Alisha Penev (Burnaby, BC) from heading one in off of a corner kick.
One sailed by Wilford in the second half, but she got lucky when
Janine Frazao, reigning Canada West MVP, was called offside and the goal was disallowed. Wilford made another diving save in the 84th minute to keep the score at zero.
In the end, no one could get on the scoreboard. With the tie UBC moves to 3-0-1, while the Huskies are 3-1-1.
