OAKLAND - The UBC Thunderbirds picked up a pair of close wins over Holy Names University on Saturday, downing HNU 3-0 and 3-2 in a doubleheader in Oakland, Calif.
Freshman
Leigh Della Siega put together her second straight strong performance of the weekend, throwing a complete seven innings allowing just three hits and four walks while striking out five.
Tanya McLean got UBC on the board in the first inning, cashing in Jess Barclay with a double to make it 1-0 for UBC. McLean scored a run in the third after a walk and a fielder's choice advanced her to second before a single up the middle from
Lindsay McElroy. The 'Birds tacked on the final run of the game with Jess Hodge plating
Courtney O'Connor in the same inning. McLean was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks in the win.
The day's second game saw UBC pull out the victory in the seventh, thanks to an RBI from
Alyssa Derksen. Derksen had a solid day, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored in addition to cashing home the winning run.
In the top of the third, Barclay led-off with a double and was followed by a Derksen single. McLean cashed in both runners with a double to make 2-0 for the 'Birds. HNU got one back in the fourth and another in the bottom of the sixth to knot the game a 2-2.
Tayla Westgard led-off the seventh with a single.
Carlyn Shimizu laid down a bunt single and Barclay followed to load the bases for UBC. Derksen converted the T-Bird's opportunity with a single.
Nicole Day got the start and went four innings, allowing two hits and one run.
Kelsey Andison pitched the final three innings, allowing three hits and striking out three with just one run allowed.
UBC faces Patten and Holy Names in a pair of games on Sunday to close out their trip to Oakland.
