REDDING, CA - The UBC Thunderbirds women's softball team began their season with a double header against the no. 6 ranked Concordia-Irvine Eagles on the road in Redding, Calif. In the end, the hard hitting Eagles proved too much for the 'Birds and won both games by scores of 11-3 and 12-5.
"Overall we struggled to find the strike zone today against an aggressive Concordia team," said UBC head coach Phil Thom.
In the opening game of the set, UBC walked 10 Eagle batters which cost them on the scoreboard as they were only out hit nine to five. Senior
Tanya McLean was 2-for-3 in the game, with both her hits of the home run variety, and
Molly Gosnell also added a home run, on the very first pitch she saw this season.
"In the second game, we performed much better across the board," noted Thom.
Despite being out hit only 11 to eight, UBC once again could not match the opportunistic Eagles who rank among the top squads in the NAIA.
Friday marks the beginning of the Simpson University Invitational - a six team tournament that sees the T-Birds play six games over two days. They open tournament play against Menlo Park College at 11:30 a.m. on Friday and take on California Baptist and Simpson University later in the day.
