VANCOUVER - In Kelowna on Friday night, the No. 4 UBC Thunderbirds men's volleyball dropped a four-set match to the host UBC Okanagan Heat.
The set scores were 22-25, 25-18, 25-22 and 25-19.
"We played extremely timid,” said UBC head coach
Richard Schick. "They had three outside guys who hit the ball, they were just more aggressive than us on offence and on defence. For us to get one block in four sets, I've never been a part of something like that before. They had us chasing all night, we had our opportunities but we just didn't convert them where they converted almost every single one of their chances."
Both teams came into the meeting undefeated after two matches.
Thunderbird rookie outside hitter
Jarrid Ireland (Winnipeg, MB) led his team with 11 kills and was well supported by fifth-year middle Yaroslav Kozel (Winnipeg, MB), who tallied 10 kills.
The Heat's key returnee and outside hitter Riley McFarland (4th year, Surrey, BC) totaled 25 kills tonight and took 12 digs. He was strongly supported by fellow outside hitter Nate Speijer (4th year, Penticton, BC), who managed to add 17 kills of his own.
The same teams will meet again on Saturday night, beginning at 8:00 p.m. at UBC's Okanagan campus. The game will be streamed live at www.canadawest.tv
