LETHBRIDGE - In the final game of the season,
Janine Frazao registered a hat trick to lead the CIS third ranked UBC Thunderbirds to a 3-2 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
Janelle Groten and Kayla Wurzer responded for the 'Horns.
The opening of the game started tentatively mostly due to the strong gusting winds and it took awhile for both teams to adjust accordingly. UBC would strike first in the 22nd minute.
Rachael Sawer's cross found Frazao back post and deep in the box, which she headed off Horns keeper Kelsey Willoughby and in.
A short time later, the 'Horns would have their best opportunity in the first half with Erika Anderson's shot from just outside the penalty area curling just wide of the net.
UBC doubled its lead in the 38th minute on a penalty kick; Frazao's initial shot was stopped by Willoughby but the back spin on the ball spun the ball off the post and in.
Before the half was up, Frazao was back at it and nearly scored a first half hat-trick but Willoughby made an outstanding diving save on her half volley.
The 'Horns cut the T-Birds lead in half early into the second half off a free kick from 30-yards out. Kayla Wurzer's perfectly placed free kick found the head of senior Janelle Groten, who headed it top right corner.
Off another free kick, Wurzer dangerously set the ball into the T-Bird box but UBC keeper
Emily Wilson was able to corral the ball as she came off her line.
In the 83rd minute, Frazao completed her hattrick and restored the Thunderbirds two goal advantage.
She finishes the regular season with 16 goals in 14 games.
Playing until the final whistle, the 'Horns drew back to within one in injury time off another free kick. Off of this set piece, Wurzer picked the top left corner out of the reach of Wilson.
With the win the T-Birds finish the regular season with a 11-1-2 record and will be the second seed heading into the Canada West Championships hosted by Trinity Western. With the loss, the 'Horns wrap up the 2011 season with a 0-11-3 record.
