REGINA, Sask. –
Scott Wasden's overtime goal with just over a minute left gave UBC a 3-2 win over the host Regina Cougars in Canada West men's hockey action on Saturday night.
Wasden corralled a loose puck after a shot from the point, put it on his backhand, and beat Regina goalie Lucas Gore to give UBC (3-1-2) its third victory of the young Canada West season.
Both of Regina's goals were scored by Lucas Isley and came just 87 seconds apart. Isley scored a beauty with 33 seconds remaining in the second period, then scored another just 54 seconds into the third period to give the Cougars their only lead of the game.
Michael Wilgosh scored the lone power play goal of the contest exactly four minutes after Isley's second goal, tying the game at two. The score stayed 2-2 through regulation until Wasden's goal, his fourth of the season.
Max Grassi opened the scoring for UBC with just over six minutes left in the second.
Jordan White made 25 saves in the win for the Thunderbirds, while Gore stopped 31 of UBC's 34 shots. UBC was 1-for-6 on the power play, while Regina was held scoreless on its four opportunities with the man advantage.
UBC continues the Canada West schedule next weekend with a pair of home matches against Calgary (5-3-0), while the Cougars (2-5-1) will have a weekend off before playing host to those same Dinos on Nov. 11 and Nov. 12 at The Co-operators Centre.
