LETHBRIDGE, AB – On the strength of two first half goals, the no. 2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds rebounded from a disappointing loss in Calgary the previous day with a 3-0 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
Despite the blustery conditions, the Thunderbirds used good ball movement and spacing to maintain control of the game and if not for the stellar goalkeeping of the Pronghorn's Colin Pattison the score could have been far worse at half. Pattison made nine of his 13 saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Before the game was even 15 minutes old, the T-Birds hit the score sheet.
Greg Smith got his first of two in the half off a diving header, finishing a beautiful cross from William Hyde.
Pattison kept the Horns close making a sequence of three brilliant saves, including a diving save off
Jason Gill followed by tipping
Graeme Webber's rebound over the bar.
With only five minutes remaining in the half, Smith was back at it again with his shot from just outside the 18 yard box finding the low left corner.
The break did the Horns wonders as they came out with a far better effort, generating two quality chances in the opening 15 minutes after the restart.
Freshman Blake Irvine missed a shot just wide and followed up with the Horns best chance of the game up until that point. His header off a corner narrowly missed the right post. After being outshot in the first half, the Horns more than doubled their total in the second with eight to match the visiting T-Birds.
Gagandeep Dosanjh salted the game away in the 86th minute with the T-Birds third goal.
Kalthoff kept his shutout intact with two exceptional saves in the final 10 minutes. His first came off another Brownjohn free kick and his best came in the final minute, turning away Andrew Malcolm on a rebound.
With the loss the Horns fall to 1-4-1, while the Thunderbirds improve to 4-1-0.
The Horns return to action next weekend in a home-and-home series with the Calgary Dinos starting in Lethbridge Saturday afternoon. UBC plays host to the Alberta Golden Bears and Saskatchewan Huskies next weekend.
