VANCOUVER - Winston Day Chief potted his second goal of the game 49 seconds into overtime, propelling the Lethbridge Pronghorns to a 5-4 win over the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.
Brian Matte setup Day Chief in the slot for the winner, as the Lethbridge winger made no mistake beating UBC goalie
Jordan White on the 'Horns 30th shot of the night. Matte added a pair of goals and two assists to help pace Lethbridge.
UBC got goals from four different players and jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the second period but it wasn't enough as the visitors clawed all the way back.
After
Justin McCrae put UBC up by two at the 17:06 mark of the second, Matte scored his second of the game on the man advantage with 46 seconds left in the middle frame.
Dustin Moore tied the game in the third with a short-handed marker at 11:42, going top corner on the breakaway. Neither team could find a winner in regulation time and Day Chief played the hero in the extra frame.
White made 25 saves in the loss while his counterpart Reese St. Goddard stopped 19 pucks in the win.
It started well for the hosts as
Max Grassi put UBC up 1-0. The second-year man stuffed home a rebound in tight after a great rush by linemate
Marc Desloges got the puck to the net.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Matte got his first of the night 38 seconds later working down low with Day Chief to tie the game. Day Chief's first of the game with 30 seconds left in the first gave the 'Horns their first lead of the game before UBC responded with three second period goals.
Tyler Ruel tallied at 5:01 of the middle period, potting home a cross crease pass from T-Bird captain
Matthew Schneider.
Ben Schmidt picked up his third of the season just under three minutes later, smacking home a rebound off a long range
Mike Liambas shot.
UBC's woes on the power play continued as they were 0-for-5 and gave up the short-handed marker. Lethbridge was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
The two teams meet again Saturday night. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
