CHARLOTTETOWN (CIS) – The UBC Thunderbirds defeated the UPEI Panthers 4-0 in the second one-sided consolation semi-final during game 6 of the 2010 CIS Women's Soccer Championship.
The Thunderbirds now face the Laval Rouge et Or tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. PST in the consolation final.
The first half saw the Panthers pushed deep into their end for a large portion of the time with UBC having the upper hand in shots 7-0 but were unable to convert despite the pressure. Midway through the half PEI goalkeeper, Channelle Roy was kicked in the groin by her own player and down for several minutes. She was able to get up and shake it off and her fitness was immediately tested as the T-Birds forced her into two great saves.
Janine Frazao, UBC's player of the game, opened the scoring in the 60th minute. The game was put out of reach late as Birds scored at seemingly at will in the final minutes with goals from
Carmen Lindsay in the 83rd minute,
Lisa Furutani in the 88th and
Christina Donnelly in the 90th to finish of a clearly out of gas Panther squad 4-0.
“The tournament didn't go the way we hoped, but we'll take the win and look to do well on Sunday,” commented Frazao.
In the championship draw on Saturday OUA finalist, the Queen's Golden Gaels, take on the Fraser Valley Cascades and their eight game winning streak in the first semi-final at 9:00 p.m. PST. The second match will pit two conference champs against each as RSEQ winners, the Montreal Carabins take on the Laurier Golden Hawks, champions of the OUA.
