OMAHA, Neb. – The UNO hockey team got two goals from freshman Matt White to beat the University of British Columbia, 6-1 in an exhibition game on Saturday night at the Qwest Center. The game is the Mavericks' one tune-up before regular season action begins next week.
The Mavericks broke on top at 11:45 of the first period when Bryce Aneloski wired a shot past UBC goalie
Jordan White. Alex Hudson and Matt Ambroz earned the assists.
White sandwiched a pair of goals around a tally by UBC's
Wyatt Hamilton to put UNO up 3-1 after two. Joey Martin forced the puck away from Thunderbirds' defenseman
Matt Pepe. White scooped up the puck and beat goalie
Jordan White with a hard wrist shot to make it 2-0.
Late in the second, the Mavs took advantage of their third power play of the game. White took the rebound of a shot by Terry Broadhurst and knocked the puck in at 18:48.
The Mavericks added goals from Hudson, Zahn Raubenheimer and Rich Purslow to pull away in the third period. They outshot the Thunderbirds, 16-5 in the third period and 35-19 for the game.
John Faulkner picked up the win in only 20 minutes of work. He stopped all eight shots he faced. Mike Taffe surrendered UBC's only goal on six shots in the second period. Fredrik Bergman worked the third period, stopping all five shots.
UBC continues their three-game NCAA road swing with a match-up against Minnesota on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. PT.
