ABBOTSFORD - Gagandeep Dosanjh scored a pair of goals late in the first half to spark his UBC Thunderbirds to five unanswered as they cruised to a 6-2 victory over the UFV Cascades on the road Sunday afternoon.
The speedy first-year forward drew UBC (8-2-2) level 2-2 with the host Cascades (3-9-0) in the 39th minute before putting the visitors ahead for good with his second of the afternoon and team-leading sixth goal of the campaign in the 43rd minute.
Brandon Bonafacio made 4-2 for UBC with his third goal of the season just over a minute later. Matthew Allard and
Navid Mashinchi added goals in the 64th and 89th minutes respectively to put an exclamation mark the UBC win.
Greg Smith opened the scoring in the 3rd minute for UBC only to see UFV's Stuart Rowlands equalize in the 7th minute before Brent Wantke temporarily put UFV in front in the 26th.
Matt Robinson earned the win in his first start of the season, making five stops.
UBC sits second in the Canada West with 26 points and a pair of games remaining on their schedule, four points back of first-place Alberta. The 'Birds can still catch the Golden Bears for first in the conference but they will need some help from the TWU Spartans next weekend.
TWU and UBC travel east in a week's time to take on Saskatchewan and Alberta to close the Canada West regular season. UBC needs a pair of wins, including one over Alberta in their season finale on Sunday, combined with a TWU win or tie against the Golden Bears on Saturday to have any hope of earning the automatic berth to the CIS national championship that is awarded for a first-place result in CW regular season play.
Alberta, who had been in fine form with nine straights wins coming into Sunday, lost 3-1 on the road to the third-place Calgary to keep UBC's first-place aspirations alive.
