VICTORIA - While the UVic Vikes men's soccer has already been eliminated from the playoff picture, pride was on the line Saturday when they hosted rivals UBC Thunderbirds. But with the no. 5 T-Birds still jockeying for the league's top spot and a nationals berth, UBC dominated a 3-0 decision. Improving to 7-2-2, the T-Birds kept pace with table leader Alberta.
On Saturday, the T-Birds' league-leading defence recorded its sixth shutout of the season with rookie 'keeper
Richard Meister in net. UBC has only surrendered nine goals in 2010.
Gregory Smith put UBC on the board in the 13th minute and
Graeme Webber scored again before the half expired, hammering home a rebound in the 29th minute. Webber setup another score in the 61st with Matthew Allard beating the Victoria keeper after Webber's effort rang off the upright.
Vikes 'keeper Elliot Mitrou made four stops in goal.
UBC continues their four-game road trip to close out the regular season with a tilt against UFV on Sunday before traveling to Saskatchewan and Alberta next weekend.
