VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds defeated their Okanagan brethren, the UBC-O Heat, 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-19) in an exhibition match on Monday to sweep a pair of Thanksgiving tilts at War Memorial Gym.
Rookie
Ben Chow led the 'Birds with seven kills after notching a team-best 11 in Sunday's 3-1 win. Middles
Joe Cordonier,
Cary Brett and
Jeff Ross provided the bulk of the offensive support with a combined 14 kills.
UBC head coach
Richard Schick is pleased with his team's progress in the pre-season, especially since they are relying on so many new faces.
"Today we were just much sharper, a lot more consistent, and we pushed a lot harder. It was a workman-like performance and we didn't allow them a lot of breathing room," said Schick.
"We played every point hard and took care of the ball a lot better. At points we had four or five new guys out on the court together. We are still trying to find our identity but the more they play together, the better we will get."
UBC continues their pre-season this weekend with a pair of games against another provincial rival, the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack. On Friday the two BC schools meet for a match at Fleetwood Park Secondary (7:00 p.m. first serve). They face-off on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. on the hardwood at War Memorial Gym.
