REGINA – The UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Regina Cougars in straight sets on Friday night in Canada West volleyball action at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The T-Birds won 25-19 in the first set and 25-21 in both the second and the third sets to collect their second win of the season.
Kyle Duperron led the UBC attack with a match-high 14 kills on just 26 attempts, finishing with a .346 hitting percentage.
Blair Bann tied for the match lead with nine digs, while
Ryan Zwarich dished out 31 assists and added eight digs.
Cary Brett had a big night recording a solo block and seven block assists to go along with six kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
Brett's strong effort in the middle was not lost on head coach richard Schick: "The difference maker tonight was
Cary Brett. Whenever we needed a kill or a block, he is the one that stepped up at key points through out the match", said Schick.
Jamie Wilkins led the Cougars with nine kills and hit for a .467 percentage, while Colin Finch and Drew Smith both had eight kills. Lindsey Isaak had nine digs and first-year setter Caleb Eschbach had 26 assists.
UBC improves to 2-7 with the victory. The Cougars fall to 0-9 on the season.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 6 p.m. at the CKHS.
