T-Birds facing near must win weekend against 'Horns

VANCOUVER – With only eight games remaining in the 2009-10 regular season, the sixth-placed UBC Thunderbirds (7-12-1) are in the market for two points from each and every game left on their schedule.

They begin that quest this weekend as they play their final two games on the UBC campus before vacating Point Grey as the 2010 Olympic Winter Games take over the entire Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. Puck drop against the Lethbridge Pronghorns (7-10-3) is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Father Bauer Arena.

A look at the Thunderbirds
The T-Birds are coming off a weekend split against No. 8 Manitoba (11-5-2), a team they have beaten three times already this season.  Unfortunately, UBC hasn't carried over that same success against the 'Horns. The T-Birds are only 1-3-0 against Lethbridge this season with their lone victory a 4-3 shootout win back in November.

Tyler Ruel leads the UBC offence with 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) and is tied for tenth in league scoring. Brandon Campos isn't far behind with 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) and has been arguably UBC's best offensive player in 2010.

Cam Brodie, a newcomer in 2010 along the blueline for the 'Birds, picked up his first goal as a T-Bird and was a +3 in UBC's 3-0 win over Manitoba last weekend.  Rookie goalie Jordan White earned his first CIS shutout in that game and is now 4-3 on the season with a 3.61 GAA and .884 save percentage.

A look at the Pronghorns
Lethbridge is on a three-game winning streak with a victory over Manitoba two weeks ago and a weekend sweep of provincial rivals Calgary last weekend.

The 'Horns rank fourth in conference scoring behind the stellar play of Dustin Moore, Andrew Courtney, and Adam Chorneyko.  Moore currently sits tied for third in the league scoring race on 24 points with five goals and league-best 19 assists.  Courtney is tied for the league lead with 13 goals and Chorneyko rounds out the threesome with solid finish and touch (nine goals, seven assists).

Unfortunately the 'Horns success on offence hasn't been matched on defence.  Defenceman Ryan Potruff is having a good offensive season with 14 points (three goals, 11 assists), however, he leads a defensive unit that has surrendered a league-worst 82 goals.  Goalie Scott Bowles has appeared in all 20 games this season and leads the league in minutes played (1,178:55), shots faced (652), goals against (74) and losses (11).  He is sporting a 3.77 GAA and .887 save percentage.

Senior's Night - Saturday, January 23

This Saturday, the UBC Thunderbirds men's hockey team will pay tribute to a quartet of long serving players who will be suiting up in their final home on the Point Grey campus.

Nick Duff - A long serving member of the T-Birds defensive corps, Nick played in almost every game of his T-Bird career until an injury early this year kept him out of the lineup.  Despite the setback this season, Duff has still appeared in 123 careers games, recording three goals and 14 assists.

Jeff Lynch - Captain of the 2009-10 T-Birds, Jeff is one of three Lynch brothers to don the Blue and Gold. Over his four seasons at UBC, Lynch has amassed 22 goals and 48 assists in 115 career games. He tallied a career-high 21 points during the 2008-09 season to finish 16th in Canada West scoring.

Darrell May - A gifted setup man, Darrell led the T-Birds in scoring during his first four years on the squad.  He ranks tied for ninth all-time in UBC conference career scoring with 104 points (30 goals, 74 assists).  He returned to the club after a brief stint in the pros during the winter of 2009 and has career numbers of 142 games played, 37 goals, 95 assists, and 340 penalty minutes.

Francois Thuot - Thout's athleticism in goal has served him well as a member of the T-Birds and he has appeared in at least 20 games in each of his four years at UBC. He has career numbers of 31 wins, 46 losses, and a single tie. Thuot has has played over 4,000 minutes as a T-Bird, facing more than 2,500 shots. He has also tallied a pair of assists.
