T-Birds record now 3-5 after Manitoba forfeits three games

EDMONTON – The Canada West Universities Athletic Association announced on Tuesday, November 3 that due to an eligibility violation, the official results of three football games played by the University of Manitoba have been overturned.

One of those three games included the Bisons 36-10 win over the UBC Thunderbirds on September 19, 2009. As per Canada West bylaws, the use of an ineligible player results in forfeiture of games in which the student-athlete was deemed ineligible and the results of those games are now 1-0 in favour of the opposing team.

For the second time this season the T-Birds have earned a win after an opponent used an ineligible player with the CW also overturning the SFU Clan's 26-7 season opening win over UBC.

UBC now finishes the season with a 3-5 record which moves them into a tie with the Regina Rams for the fourth and final playoff spots. Regina holds the tiebreak over UBC by virtue of their 28-17 win in the team's lone meeting this season and advances to meet Saskatchewan (7-1) in the Canada West playoffs.

Alberta (4-4), the other team to earn a win from Manitoba's forfeitures, now plays provincial rival Calgary (7-1) in the other Canada West semifinal.

The Bisons had finished third in the conference with a 5-3 record but instead they end the season with a 2-5 mark as their game against SFU on September 10 has been declared a 'no contest' as both teams used ineligible players.
