CALGARY - The UBC Thunderbirds (4-8-1) fell behind early and couldn't make up ground on the Calgary Dinos (7-4-2) in a 4-1 loss on the road at Father Bauer Arena in Calgary.
Matthew Schneider tallied his league leading third short handed goal of the season but it wasn't enough as UBC fell behind 4-0 before the veteran centreman responded for the visitors.
Four different Dinos found the back of the net on Friday. Torrie Wheat scored his Calgary leading eighth goal of the season early in the third period and added a helper to earn his 11th and 12th points of the season.
Wheat's linemate Brock Nixon opened the scoring midway through the first period for the Dinos and he added an assist as that duo combined for four points and 13 of the Dinos 32 shots.
A pair of power play goals in the second period blew open a 1-0 game for the Dinos.
Defenceman Joel Eisenkirch found the back of the net for the first time this season just under four minutes into the second with the man advantage. Fellow defenceman Cory Pritz added another special teams marker at the 17:27 mark of the middle frame. Both goals came with less than 10 seconds remaining in the UBC penalties.
Dustin Butler picked up the win for the Dinos making 25 saves. Rookie
Jordan White earned his second straight start for the T-Birds and made 28 stops in the loss.
UBC and Calgary finish up the weekend series on Saturday night with puck drop scheduled for 6:00 p.m. PST. The Birds host the Dinos next weekend in Vancouver to close out the first half of the season with another two-game set.
