VANCOUVER –
Caitlin Davie capitalized off a corner kick for an early two goal lead that held up as the UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 2-0 at Thunderbird Park on Friday night.
The win moves the T-Birds (5-2-4) into sole possession of fourth place in the Canada West three points clear of the idle Mantioba Bisons for the final playoff spot.
With Alberta's 3-0 loss at TWU on Friday, UBC is now also just one point behind the PAndas and a victory over Alberta would put UBC in the driver's eat as they make a made dash towards the playoffs.
The loss keeps the Huskies (4-6-1) in seventh spot, six points back of UBC and three behind Manitoba.
The UBC attack was driven by striker-turned-midfielder
Lisa Furutani who had success pushing the ball up the left flank and behind the Saskatchewan defence.
"Lisa was our MVP today," said UBC coach Dick Mosher. "She repeatedly turned defenders and gave us opportunities to score."
Her efforts resulted in numerous chances for the T-Birds including the corner that produced Davie's goal.
Saskatchewan seemed to have cleared the T-Bird threat but a misplayed ball came to fifth-year defender
Kelly Isberg who smartly sent it to an open Davie who finished inside the far post to put the 'Birds up by two goals only six minutes in.
UBC jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead just seconds after the whistle when defender
Jessica Briker put in a long ball in from 40 yards. The ball bounced in the penalty area over a stunned Alicia Middlebrook to count one of the stranger goals of the season for the home side.
"I thought we attacked with rhythm today, our finish could have been better but our front line showed good mobility, which is a good sign moving forward," added Mosher.
Saskatchewan did their best to get back in the game following the two T-Bird markers as the Huskies' Elizabeth Hudon had three chances to get her side on the board.
In the 27th minute the third-year striker was robbed of a goal by a sliding
Chelsea Stang. Two minutes later she was sent in alone but was stoned by UBC keeper
Jaclyn Dunnett before putting a rebound wide.
Saskatchewan travels to Langley to face the first place Spartans while the Thunderbirds host Alberta on Saturday at Thunderbird Park. Kick-offs are set for 5 p.m.
