VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds (3-2-4) came into Friday's match against the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns (0-9-0) needing a win to keep pace in the race for the post season and thanks to a big second half, the T-Birds convincingly achieved their task.
Rookie
Janine Frazao scored four goals in just over 15 minutes in the second forty-five to propel her side to a 6-0 victory over the 'Horns at Thunderbird Park.
Frazao tallied goals in the 70th, 75th, 80th, and 85th minutes as the T-Birds took advantage of Lethbridge's tactic to go three at the back.
The T-Birds had just 12 goals through their first eight games, with five of those having come in one contest.
UBC head coach Dick Mosher was happy with the finish displayed tonight, however, he still sees room for improvement.
"They went with only three defenders [trying to score a goal] and whenever you have players with pace up front, you can take advantage of that," noted Mosher. "I still don't think we played as well as we can but the finish was much better tonight."
Frazao displayed supreme touch, going from full speed runs to delicate finishes with regularity, as three of her goals came on breakaways. She also helped spring
Sara Treloar who tallied in the 82nd minute to round out the second half scoring.
Fellow UBC rookie
Rachael Sawer opened the scoring late in the first half with a definitive strike off the post and in from 12 yards out. The T-Birds finally converted on one of their many chances as
Diane Rizzardo sprung Sawer in alone with a nifty feed from just outside the penalty area.
Despite not scoring until the 43rd minute, the T-Birds controlled the run of the play for the entire match. They held the 'Horns without a shot while tallying 31 efforts towards the goal.
Lethbridge keeper Ashley Cowan made eight saves in the loss, including a number of point black stops.
The T-Birds welcome the Calgary Dinos tomorrow to Thunderbird Park. The Dinos lost 2-0 Friday night to Trinity Western, who host Lethbridge tomorrow. Both games are scheduled for 5 p.m. kick-offs.
