A native of Brandon, Manitoba, Richard Schick enters his 12th season as the UBC Thunderbirds head coach, having guided the program to the postseason 10 of the last 11 years, including two trips to the CIS National Championships.

Led by All-Canadians Ben Chow and Milan Nikic, the Thunderbirds finished second in the Canada West regular season with a record of 15-7 in 2013-14. However, they were upset in the conference quarter-finals, losing back-to-back five set thrillers to the Brandon Bobcats.

UBC finished fourth in the Canada West standings in 2012-13 with a record of 15-7, earning a home playoff date. They defeated Manitoba 2-0 in the best-of-three Canada West quarterfinals earning a spot in the Canada West Final Four. Unfortunately, they lost a tough fought semi-final match to Trinity Western in five sets and then ran out of gas against Alberta in the bronze medal game. Schick earned his 100th career regular season victory as coach of UBC on February 2, 2013 when the Thunderbirds defeated his hometown Brandon Bobcats 3-1.

In 2011-12, Schick led the 'Birds to a 10-10 conference record in the ultra competitive Canada West conference. There were seven Canada West teams regularly ranked in the CIS Top 10. UBC was ranked as high as #4 in the nation having made the Top 10 every week of the season. Unfortunately they bowed out in the first round of the Canada West playoffs, losing to Alberta who went on to finish sixth at the CIS Championships. 

The Thunderbirds finished 2010-11 with a conference record of  7-11, earning a spot in the Canada West post-season. UBC's record could have been easily above .500. The squad, known as was of the scrapiest and toughest teams in the league, lost five matches by set scores of 3-2 - the highest mark in the league..

Schick led the Thunderbirds to a fourth place finish in their first National Championship in 18 seasons during the 2006-07 season and the T-Birds followed that up with a fifth place result at the 2008 CIS Championship.

Before coming to UBC, Schick coached at the University of Alberta for two years where he took the Golden Bears to the national final in back-to-back seasons, winning CIS gold in 2001-02 and silver the following season, when he was named both Canada West and CIS coach of the year (2002-03).

Prior to his time with the Bears, he coached at Red Deer College in the ACAC, taking home a CCAA national championship banner in 2000-01.

His career regular season and playoff record at UBC is 111-107, while at the University of Alberta, he was 43-10.

Schick also has experience at the national level, serving as the head coach of the Canadian junior national team for one year after two seasons as an assistant. During his time with the program, the squad competed at the 2004 NORCECA Championship in Winnipeg, the 2003 World Championships in Tehran, Iran and won its NORCECA World Championship qualification zone.

As a player, Schick spent one season with TV Dueren, a first division team in the German Bundesliga, after completing a strong university career at Alberta. While playing for the Bears, he won a national championship and was named a Canada West all-star in 1996-97, and also claimed a bronze medal in 1998-99. Mirroring his coaching career, he played at Red Deer College in the ACAC before his stint in the CIS, where he won two consecutive CCAA championships and was named a CCAA All-Canadian and the 1996 CCAA tournament MVP. .

Schick earned his Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta in 2000. He and his wife, Kim, live in Vancouver with their two young children, Noah and Seacret.
