Joy Spear Chief-Morris earned top honours in the Association of Independent Institutions Conference this week as she was named the Female Athlete of the Week for April 14-20.

Spear Chief-Morris, a UBC sprinter, had an excellent week in Southern California, qualifying for the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in two events. The sophomore from Lethbridge, Alta. ran a personal-best 11.73 seconds in the women's 100 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays, finishing 15th overall. The performance surpassed the NAIA "A" standard and made her eligible for selection to Canadian national team entry at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletics Association Under-23 Athletics Championships this summer in Kamloops, B.C.

The following day, she qualified for the nationals in the women's 200 meters after finishing 11th in that event at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., with a time of 24.71. She capped off the weekend by winning the 100 meters at the Beach Invitational in Norwalk, Calif., bettering 85 other competitors with her time of 11.99. She also placed 29th in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.19 at the Beach Invitational.
