UBC runner Luc Bruchet was named the Association of Independent Institutions Conference Male Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 13-19.
Bruchet, a senior from White Rock, B.C., won the 3000-meter race in a meet-record time of seven minutes and 54.47 seconds beating NIKE OTC Elite athlete Ben Blankenship and a large number of NCAA Division I runners at the University of Washington Indoor Preview. He surpassed the old meet standard of 7:54.88 set by Irish Olympian Alistair Cragg in 2010. Bruchet also broke and 18-year-old indoor school record of 7:59.29, which was set in 1996 by Jeff Schiebler, a former Canadian Olympian. Bruchet's performance is the second-best in the world so far this season, according to the IAAF website.
