VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds are very well represented this summer with a total of seven current and former players donning the maple leaf for Volleyball Canada's national teams.
Heading into their second seasons with the 'Birds this fall, six-foot-five left side hitter Coltyn Liu and 2017-18 U SPORTS All-Rookie Fynn McCarthy have both been named to the national junior team along with a pair of incoming recruits in fellow left side Michael Dowhaniuk and middle blocker Matthew Neaves.
T-Bird alumnus Blair Bann will also represent the red and white on the Senior Men's A Team while U SPORTS national championship MVP
Byron Keturakis and newly announced recruit Ben Hooker are all part of the Senior Men's B Team. McCarthy is pulling double duty for team Canada having also been named to the Senior B Team.
The Senior Men's A Team was in Bulgaria last week competing in Volleyball Nations League play and will be in Jiangmen, China this coming weekend to face the Chinese national team along with Japan and Serbia.
Liu, Dowhaniuk, and Neaves, meanwhile, are gearing up for the NORCECA U-21 Continental Championship set to take place August 25 to September 2 in Havana, Cuba.
