VANCOUVER – The future of the UBC Thunderbird track and field program was on full throttle display over the weekend at the BC High School Track and Field Championships held in Langley, BC.
When the dust had settled on the track at McLeod Athletic Park, athletes who will wear the 'Blue and Gold' next track season had accumulated 12 medals, two major awards, and helped their respective schools to four team championships.

Leading the way for the soon-to-be 'Birds were Handsworth's Charlie Dannatt and Vancouver College's Anastas Eliopolous
Dannatt took double gold by winning the 1500m and 3000m metre events. In both races the silver medal went to another UBC recruit, Oak Bay's Tyler Dozzi. Both runners shattered a 42 year-old record in the 3000m, as Dannatt crossed the finish line a whopping six seconds faster then the mark set way back in 1972.
Eliopolous dominated the sprinting events over the weekend, taking gold in the 100m, 110m hurdles and running the anchor leg as Vancouver College raced to a record time victory in the 4 x 100m relays.
On the women's side of the event, Nanaimo native Hassy Fashina Bombata cruised to victory in the 100m final, while Maple Ridge's Jamie Hennessy helped her squad tale gold in the 4 x 400m relay.
"UBC's incoming recruiting class of 2017 demonstrated this weekend they are ready to step in as freshman and contribute at the university level," says UBC Head Coach
Laurier Primeau. "This is a testament ot their dedication to their sport, their genetics, and to the level of coaching in this province. The outstanding high school coaching in BC should not be understated."
