VANCOUVER – On the final day of competition at the Canada West Swimming Championships, the UBC Thunderbirds overtook the Calgary Dinos to win both the men's and women's titles at the UBC Aquatic Centre on Sunday afternoon.
"Those were real character wins, up against bigger teams and not just bigger teams, but real quality teams. There were a lot of good swimmers all over from the Canada West here this weekend. I think our kids really just stuck to their guns and had a game plan and never blinked," said UBC's
Steve Price, who was named the Canada West 2015-16 Men's Coach of the Year earlier today. "At the end of they day they got the job done, so when you're a winning team like they've been for a number of years they know how to close it out and they did it again."
The battle for the women's banner came down to the final 4x100-metre individual medley relay, with UBC's squad of
Mckenzie Summers,
Erin Stamp,
Jacomie Strydom and
Rebecca Terejko touching the wall first in four minutes and 4.07 seconds, ahead of Calgary (Chelsea Shaul, Tianna Rissling, Danielle D'Aoust, Leah Smal), which finished second with a time of 4:08.47.
That final race left the host Thunderbirds with 832 points, and the Dinos with 819.5. The Alberta Pandas were third with 407.
Calgary led by 6.5 points going into the final day.
For the UBC women, it was their seventh straight Canada West championship - and the most closely contested of the bunch. The Thunderbirds have now won the Canada West 27 times.
Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson was named the Canada West Female Swimmer of the Meet after claiming three individual gold medals (200 back, 200 free and 400 IM), two relay golds (4x100 free and 4x200 free) and one silver (200 IM) over the course of the three-day meet.
Calgary's Lauren Teghtsoonian was named the league's Female Rookie of the Year. Her silver-medal performances in the women's 400 free and the 4x200 free relay highlighted her first Canada West conference meet. The Dinos also claimed the women's Coach of the Year honour, which went to Mike Blondal.
