VANCOUVER -Â The UBC women's soccer team completed their weekend away with a second win in consecutive nights. The Thunderbirds beat the Calgary Dinos 3-1, with three superbly taken second-half goals, to move up to second in the conference.
Â
BOX SCORE
Calgary took the lead early on with a fantastic finish by Nikki Furukawa and played well to deserve their first half advantage. The Dinos were well set defensively and made UBC take their shots from distance, Calgary's keeper Samantha Chang-Foldl was only required to make one save in the first half.
Â
The T-Birds bright young rookie
Jasmin Dhanda was introduced after just 33 minutes and had an almost immediate impact. Within 30 seconds of being on the pitch, she was through on goal forcing Chang-Foldl to make a good stop. She had another shot that went just wide before the intermission and forced Chang-Foldl into another save within 20 seconds of the restart. Just four minutes later she had her reward though, a perfectly chipped shot that left the keeper stranded and the game tied.
Â
It was all one-way traffic from then on, now UBC had drawn level they gathered momentum and pushed on for the win.
Nicole Sydor hit the crossbar in the 60th minute and
Taylor Shannik shot just wide before she whipped in a corner for
Shayla Chorney to guide home. UBC 2-1 up and in full control.
Â
Another inspired substitution by head coach
Andrea Neil gave the 'Birds their third goal.
Rachael Sawer replaced Sydor in the 73rd minute and had a goal of her own within 90 seconds. A cross from out wide was met by Sawer on the half-volley and had Chang-Foldl picking the ball out of the net for the third time. Calgary attempted to get back in the game and produced a late flurry of shots, one of which cannoned back off the crossbar but UBC held out to secure the win.
Â
This latest victory takes UBC to a record 7-0-3, still undefeated on the season and with five wins from their last five games. The only mar on the day was the goal conceded, bringing an end to a spectacular 724 minute-long shutout streak that stretched back exactly one month. The Thunderbirds last conceded in a 1-1 tie with Fraser Valley on Sept. 13. UBC has now conceded only twice all season, the next best team has allowed five.Â
