Hola nosotros amigos T-Birds!
After a fun filled weekend, it was time to get back to work for our second week in El Salvador (San Lorenzo). Early morning went as usual, where were assigned to different tasks; some bent “rebar”, others filled in white sand to “stomp” the sidewalk for the blue house #1, while others sanded tiles in peach house #3. After a tiring day of work, everyone got ready for dinner and an evening of hockey. We brought out leftover guacamole and salsa that the girls made and we crammed into one room to watch the Canucks game. It was a very exciting win!!! Go Canucks Go…on to round 3!
The next day, we were expecting another full day of work, but it started raining and a thunderstorm forced us to leave the work site after our lunch. During our break in the morning, as our work was slowing down, we played soccer against the masons and workers that were on the site with us. Di was able to put her soccer skills to work as the rest of us may have been a little intimidated by the physicality of the sport down here. We huddled in a house for safety because the storm was so close and the thunder was incredibly loud. We ran out of building supplies so the work day was cut short and we decided to enjoy the pool one more time. No one could really get used to the fish nibbling at your feet when you stand still in the fresh water pool but it was still fun nonetheless, especially when a select few elected to race Jen in breast stroke and free style. We enjoyed the refreshing dip and the opportunity to buy some locally crafted souvenirs from the artisan stands. Later we stopped by the market to buy raw coffee beans that our Global Village leader Miss Grizelda offered to roast for us at her house. Talk about fresh coffee!!
On Wednesday, we had to make up for some lost time. It was a day dedicated to cement mixing!! Some of us mixed cement for the last sidewalk while the rest of the group mixed cement to fill the foundation trenches. It was a tough but fun day as the sloppiness and messiness of the cement mixed combined with the heat always gives way to some great times. We finished the jobs by the afternoon but the bricks for the house had not arrived yet, so again we left the site early. We rested before dinner and then after we walked to visit the central park clock tower that was built in the 1930s. We hiked the 146 stairs to the top and were rewarded by a beautiful view that overlooked the city of San Vicente. It was nice to see the evening view of the city that we have been living in for the past two weeks. The past few days have been full of work as we are winding up our global village work.
