VANCOUVER – Ninety-plus minutes weren't enough to decide a winner between the No. 5 UBC Thunderbirds and the No. 9 Victoria Vikes on Friday night, as the two Canada West women's soccer teams shared the points in a 2-2 draw at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver.
UBC is now 8-1-1 on the season and remains in first place in the Canada West Pacific Division standings, while Victoria (6-2-2) is tied for second with Trinity Western (6-1-2).
"They didn't score off the run of play, it was two set pieces so it will be something we'll focus on this week," said UBC head coach
Marisa Kovacs. "Still thought our movement off the ball was good and our communicaition out there was good. There are a few things to work on and we'll get back at it. All in all, I thought we played well and I'm proud of the fact we showed a lot of character coming back."
All four goals were scored in the first half, with UBC midfielder
Taylor Shannik (Delta, B.C.) striking first in the third minute. The Vikes responded with two tallies, by Emily Lieuwen and Kiara Kilbey, in a seven-minute span before the home side equalized on a 42nd-minute goal by forward
Jasmin Dhanda (Surrey, B.C.).
Standing just outside the penalty area with the ball, Shannik laid a pass for Dhanda, who fired a rocket into the top right corner for her sixth goal of the Canada West conference season.
That capped off the scoring in the first half, as the teams went into halftime tied 2-2.
The offensive fireworks started early on Friday with Shannik's third-minute goal. UBC defender
Madison Guy (Langley, B.C.) had the ball in the left corner and crossed it towards the far post. Shannik met the ball and headed it back across goal, finding the bottom left corner to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
The Vikes then went ahead on two quick scores, both coming off corner kicks. In the eighth minute, Lieuwen headed teammate Stephanie Badilla Gutierrez's corner kick into the net low inside the right post to tie the game 1-1.
A minute later, UBC nearly re-took the lead when Dhanda nailed a shot off the crossbar from twenty-five yards out.
The Vikes took full advantage in the 14th minute, when Kilbey slotted home a loose ball on a goalmouth scramble that followed a corner from Badilla Gutierrez, who earned her second assist of the night on the play. UBC had cleared the shot away from the goal but the ball was ruled to have gone completely over the line before being knocked away.
The second half was decidedly more defensive as UBC didn't allow any Vikes shots in the final 45 minutes, while directing four towards the Victoria net.
Neither goalkeeper made a save in the second half. For the game, only UBC's
Olivia de Goede (Victoria, B.C.) was credited with any stops: two in the first half. Victoria had the advantage in corner kicks, 6-4.
Both teams will continue league play in southern Alberta next weekend. UBC will play Calgary (Oct. 17) and Lethbridge (Oct. 18) while Victoria will face the same squads, but in reverse order.
