Trio of Thunderbirds heading to World Junior Track Championships

VANCOUVER – Three members of the UBC Thunderbirds Track & Field team will represent Canada at next month's IAAF World U20 Championships in Finland.

Charlie Dannatt will compete in the men's 1500 metre run, Tyler Dozzi will run in the 5000 metre, and Anastas Eliopolous will race in the 110 metre hurdles.

The three freshmen will make their way across the Atlantic for the biannual competition which runs from July 10 to 15 at Ratina Stadium in Tempere, Finland.

Following a sixth-place finish in the 1500m at last month's NAIA National Championship, Dannatt qualified for Finland with a time of 3:47.16 last weekend at a meet in London, Ontario, good for fourth place.

Dozzi qualified for Finland back on April 28th when he ran a 14:13.34 at the Oregon State University High Performance Meet in Corvallis. That time earned the freshman a seventh place finish which he replicated a month later in Alabama.

Ranked fourth in the world in the 110m hurdles, Eliopolous is looking to follow up last year's silver medal performance at the Pan American U20 Athletics Championship with another podium appearance. The Vancouver College alumnus is currently the Canadian U20 record holder.

Collectively, the three Thunderbirds make up one quarter of the entire male contingent to represent Canada in Tempere. The trio will be looking to improve upon Canada's performance at the last U20 Championship in 2016 which saw a pair of bronze medals come back with the team.
